Rose of Athens Theatre’s first season has taken place at a variety of venues, including the Morton Theatre, Floorspace dance studio, Jittery Joe's Coffee Roasting Co., and various schools. At present there is no permanent space for the theatre, but an inaugural season of roving has been beneficial to the newly formed theatre company. The "Ramblin Rose Season" of 2006/2007 of Athens Theatre has begun to identify its audience and refine its own needs. The first production was The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged), a good-natured irreverent comedy. Performed at Charlie Mustard’s Jittery Joe’s Coffee Roasting Co. on Broad (across the street from the new transportation center.
In February, Rose of Athens Theatre produced North Star Light: Pathways to Freedom, utilizes music, stark honesty, humor and tenderness in the telling of almost two-dozen stories of African Americans escaping slavery. Floorspace, a beautiful dance studio next door to Canopy (Athens' trapeze studio) was the performance space for this production. North Star Light also began performing in schools in February - the first school performance was at Clarke Middle School.
In May, Rose of Athens Theatre presented NSL by invitation of Mr. Homer Wilson at the Morton Theatre at Hot Corner Celebration.
Two By Will, a production from our outreach program, Classics Aloud!, had its initial performance at Eastside High School in Atlanta in February 2007 and the final production of our first season returns to Jittery Joe's with A Midsummer Night's Dream. Hilarious and deliciously intertwined with music, Midsummer is one of Shakespeare’s most entertaining and accessible plays.
"We called 2006/2007 our ‘Rambling Rose’ season,” says Lisa Cesnik Ferguson, Artistic Director of Rose of Athens Theatre. “This was a great way for us to get a feel for how our audience responds to a variety of theatre spaces in relation to the plays we have chosen. I love the fact that our first production was at Jittery Joe’s…good theatre, perfect coffee, what more do you want?"
